Build Your Own Wooden Storage Bench (basic plans)

A basic box bench is one of the friendliest furniture builds there is — a job for a weekend with a circular saw and a drill.

Materials: one 3/4-inch Baltic birch plywood sheet, a 2x4 inner frame, a piano hinge, two gas struts, wood glue, and finish of choice.

1. Cut the box: one 16” H x 18” D x 36” L carcass from plywood, glued and screwed into a five-sided box (open top).
2. Cut the lid to overhang the box by 1/4 inch on all sides for a clean reveal.
3. Screw the 2x4 frame inside the box so the lid lands with a 1/8-inch gap.
4. Mount the piano hinge across the full back edge — full-length means the load never concentrates.
5. Install gas struts on both sides, rated for roughly the lid’s weight, mounted at a 30-degree angle so the seat creeps open instead of jumping.
6. Add a magnetic catch or a child-safety latch on the front edge.
7. Sand everything to 180 grit and finish with two coats of hardwax oil or water-based poly.
8. Add felt pads under the legs and a boot tray in front — done in a weekend, correct in every dimension.

Sizing: Seat Height 16–18”, Depth 18–22”

Seat height does the ergonomic work: at 16 to 18 inches, an adult’s knees rest at a comfortable 90-degree angle, which is why that range is the industry standard for entry seating. Below 15 inches, people feel like they’re kneeling; above 19, you’re climbing.

Depth matters twice: the seat needs 18 to 22 inches so your thighs are supported while you lace up, and the interior needs that same depth to hold shoes lying flat. A 16-inch-deep bench is a shelf with pretensions; an 18-to-22-inch bench is storage.
